Understanding the pharmacokinetics of CBD is essential when defending its potential as an anxiolytic substance. Now the pharmacology surrounding cannabidiol is complex, and to this day, the science of its mechanism of action remains unclear. That said, we are moving to an age where CBD concentrates have become increasingly popular amongst members of the scientific community. So below, I will briefly touch upon the current research surrounding cannabidiol pharmacokinetics.
Cannabidiol acts on multiple pathways binding specifically to CB2 and CB1 receptors found throughout the body. When administered at high levels, cannabidiol acts directly on a class of receptors known as 5-HT, which activates serotonin receptors called 5-HT1A (hydroxytryptamine). And when these receptors activate, they bind to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which plays many physiological roles, including mood regulation, pain relief, memory, and learning.
As mentioned, there are many different pathways cannabidiol may take to produce anxiolytic in mammalian species. When consumed, cannabidiol acts on GABA-A receptors, enhancing its binding capabilities to the neurotransmitter GABA. Briefly, the GABA neurotransmitter plays a significant role in modulating the anxiety response in people. Increasing its potential to bind to the GABA-A receptors subsequently leads to a calming effect that reduces anxiety and improves sleep. Many anti-anxiety drugs act on this mechanism, including diazepam (aka Valium) and barbiturates.

Disclaimer aside, I still did look into some recent studies published in various scientific journals to determine what their take was on CBD dosage in people. Here’s what I found:
In 2019 scientists conducted a case study to determine if CBD isolates could benefit people that presented with sleep or anxiety complaints. The study consisted of 72 adult patients who received CBD doses of 25 mg per day in the form of a capsule. Some patients received CBD doses of 50 mg per day or 75 mg per day. The result demonstrated that anxiety scores decreased in 79.2% of patients within the first month of CBD administration. As well, sleep scores improved in 66.7% of patients who presented within the first month.
Another more recent study researched in 2020 conducted a systematic review evaluating the efficacy and safety of cannabidiol isolates and concentrated in a human trial. Since this is a systematic review, the reviewers evaluated over 25 studies, including controlled clinical trials, to determine the efficacy of CBD isolates as a form of relieving anxiety in people. Of the 25 studies, 11 of them assessed CBD for anxiety in people. Within these 11 studies, participants were administered varying doses of CBD ranging from 150 mg to 900 mg (single dose). It appears that patients with a generalized anxiety disorder or general anxiety who consumed oral CBD capsules at 600 mg and 300 mg had reduced anxiety levels compared to the placebo.
