Can Delta-8 THC Show Up on Drug Tests

will delta-8 thc show up on a cannabis drug test

Delta-8 THC is still a psychoactive cannabinoid that shares an extremely similar biochemical structure to delta-9 THC. There’s a common misbelief that delta-8 THC is a «weaker» form of the regular delta-9 THC. And by that logic, delta-8 THC will not show up on a urine drug test or blood test.

This is far from the truth!

Delta-8 THC dampens the psychoactive high, but it is still very much similar to delta 9 THC at the end of the day. Hence it will show up on a blood or marijuana urine test.

So, How Long Does Delta-8 THC Stay in Your System?

Delta-8 THC is not as widely studied as delta-9 THC because its creation and use have only recently been popularized. So when we talk about how long does, delta 8 THC stays in the system.

I took a look at a scientific journal that describes the pharmacokinetics of cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant. According to the journal article, a person who has consumed marijuana would have eliminated 80% to 90% of the THC metabolites within 5 days. However, it’s important to mention that the time to excretion of cannabis metabolites is subjective to the individual user. For example, if a first-time user were to use marijuana, then they’d excrete the metabolites a lot sooner than, say, a long-time user. As well, delta 9 THC is incredibly lipophilic(which means it loves fat), so a person with a higher fat percentage is likely to retain the THC metabolites a lot longer than a person with a lower fat percentage. Briefly, we must mention that THC metabolites is detected in blood plasma, hair, and even saliva.

All the information I’ve mentioned above corresponds to the studies and research done on delta-9 THC and not delta-8 THC. That being said, since the two cannabinoids share a similar biochemical profile, it is safe to extrapolate the data collected on delta-9 THC to understand the elimination process of delta-8 THC better.

How Do Marijuana Drug Tests Even Work?

Marijuana remains a federally controlled substance in the USA its crucial to understand how marijuana drug testing works before you choose to use either delta-8 edibles or other related products. Understanding how marijuana drug tests work is crucial to anyone worried about delta-8 THC showing up on their urine or blood tests.

Now, many other marijuana drug tests are used in the USA, all of which work slightly differently. But for this article, we’ll simply focus on the most common testing form, a urinalysis.

As we mentioned above, delta-9 THC and various other THC forms, delta 8 included breakdown into metabolites, including delta-8 THC and 11-Hydroxy THC. The exact scientific term for the test used to assess the quantity of psychoactive THC found in the body (particularly urine) is called gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). And most marijuana urine testing done in the USA utilize this test to analyze the amount of 11-Hydroxy THC found in the urine.

Passing an Upcoming Marijuana Drug Test

The metabolites of Delta-8 THC can indeed result in a positive marijuana drug urine test. I have heard of many methods people use to help flush the THC metabolites out of the system. Some of these include increasing your daily water intake, which will help dilute urine and dilute the amount of metabolites present in the urine. Another method involves using THC detox kits which mask the THC metabolites with other minerals and compounds like creatinine. While many of these options seem justifiable, it’s important to remember that these are simply speculations or homemade remedies which may not work for everyone. So, how do you even pass an upcoming marijuana drug test?

The answer is simple, just avoid consuming cannabis within 30 days of a drug test
